"Liberty Enlightening the World", a gift from France to the United States to celebrate our 100th anniversaire. Still, the only part stateside in 1876 was the arm and torch, on display at the Philadelphia Exposition. The display was actually part of a massive fundraising campaign on both sides of the Atlantic. The entire statue was eventually installed on Bedloe's Island (now Liberty Island) in Lower New York Harbor, about one mile off the tip of Lower Manhattan, where the Hudson and East Rivers meet.
