Poison arrow frog [Dendrobates Auratus]

The poison arrow frog has many color varieties. Most are black, green, or light blue with black hands and spots. The adults are only 4cm long. Male frogs go through an elaborate ritual to attract mates. The male frogs first fight each other to establish territories, which are then fixed for the remainder of the mating season. The male then attracts a female with vocalizations consisting of trilling sounds. They prey on small invertebrates. Most of the time they feed on ants that have poison inside them .The frog can use the poison for its defense and it puts the poison in its skin. They can use incredible eyesight and a sticky tongue to help catch its prey. They live in Central and South America, from Nicaragua and Costa Rica to southeastern Brazil, Bolivia. It avoids being eaten by showing its colors on its skin to tell other animals “BACK OFF”. People use them as pets because of their extremely colorful skin, although they are a challenge for owners and do fairly well in captivity.
