Spring Sports: The spring schedule is nearly ended, with only baseball and soccer still playing. The Girls Tennis Team captured the State Championship for the second time in a row. The Golf Team won the region title for the fourth consecutive year, and placed fourth at state. A page with schedules and results for each team is listed in the pop-out when you point your mouse on Athletics in the left navigation bar. The most up-to-date school calendar is at www.calendarwiz.com/oma.
Athletic Banquets: This year's athletic banquets will he held at UWG's Campus Center Ballroom at 6:30 on Thur., May 8 (Middle School), and 6:30 on Tues., May 13, 2008 (Varsity). If your child participated in an interscholastic sport this year, your family is invited to attend. The OMA Warriors Booster Club graciously covers the cost for student-athletes and their coaches. More details will be available in due course.
Safety: Players are expected to wear safety equipment whenever appropriate (for
instance, cleats and shin guards for soccer; helmets, sliding pants and cleats in softball). Hydration,
stretching, warming up and cooling down are mandatory parts of your safety regimen. Responsible safety
procedures and "best practices" provide the framework for the training and game environment. The NFHS,
national governing body of interscholastic competition, provides the following warning about the
inherent dangers of competitive sports: Student athletes and parents should be aware that all sports
will always have inherent dangers. Although rare, death or catastrophic injury can result from
participation in any sport, and care should be taken by all concerned to minimize such dangers through
the use of appropriate equipment, proper training methods and common sense. Attitude: It is recognized that student-athletes have many conflicting demands on
their time. Academic success is our first priority; therefore, part of a player's responsibility to the
team is maintaining his or her best possible GPA. Players must strive never to "hurt the team" by
making poor choices which limit their participation. Attendance and effort at practice and games are
key indicators of an athlete's desire to become a better player, and are the best way to actually become
a better player.
All OMA student-athletes must sign the OMA Athletic Code of Ethics and agree to the conduct code
outlined by the coach in each of their sports. Athletes are expected to be punctual, appropriately
attired and prepared for physical exertion, as there is a great deal to do in a short period of
time.
It is expected that by joining an Oak Mountain Academy athletic team, you will demonstrate a firm
commitment to the team and a willingness to work hard, put forth your best effort—that you will strive
to maintain the record of excellence for which the OMA Warriors are known.
